The Association aims at focusing
and promoting literatures, contemporary and modern, of various countries
especially literatures in English.
It seeks to explore how world literatures in different times and different
spaces endeavor to capture many-sided truths of life and underscore the
oneness of multifaceted and varied humanity.
It ever pursues the ideal of world as one family through love, understanding
and fellow feeling and brings the critics, writers, scholar and theorists of
the world on one platform to apprehend, appreciate and assimilate the
literature, literary theory, literary traditions and cultural heritage of
their own and others.

ACTIVITIES |
|
The Association holds
annual conferences in India and abroad, publishes the journal Contemporary
World Literatures in English and books on contemporary literature, literary
theory and translation studies. It plans to hold workshops, lectures,
seminars as well as to give awards to distinguished scholars and critics for
their contribution to various literatures of the world.

III World Conference was jointly held with the annual conference
of IASCL at the autonomous and highly reputed Madras Christian College,
Chennai in December 2004 on the theme, "Environment and Literary Studies".
The conference organized by Prof. Victor S. Frederick and Dr. Nirmal
Selvamony was well attended by national and international delegates. The
keynote address was delivered by Prof. Scott Slovic, a distinguished
professor of Literature and Environment at the University of Nevada, Reno,
U.S.A.

IV World Conference was held outside India in Istanbul, Turkey
as a joint collaboration of WASLE and Department of English Dogus
University, Istanbul Turkey. The conference was organised by Dr. Dilek
Doltas (Dean Faculty of Arts). The Theme of the conference was "The
Endangered Planet in Literature" and the keynote address was delivered by
internationally acclaimed theorist Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. |

V
World Conference of WASLE and XIII All India English Teachers’
Conference of IASCLwas organized by Prof K.T. Sunitha, Professor of
English and Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, Mysore University, on
the theme, “Women’s Studies and Contemporary Literatures at Mysore
University, Mysore(India) on January 3&4,2007. The conference was
attended by a large number of delegates from abroad, particularly from
Japan, China, Iran , Spain, UK, and delegates from all parts of India.
The conference was inaugurated by internationally acclaimed Indian
English novelist Githa Hariharan, who also released II volume of WASLE
journal Contemporary World Literatures in English. In inaugural address
she threw light on gender discrimination against women in literature and
society and significant remarks on the plight of women writers
especially in English. Prof. Sheobhushan Shukla, President of WASLE and
IASCL highlighted women’s contribution in literature, specially
contemporary literature and the fast changing status of women in the
present day world. Various cultural programmes were also held at the end
of academic sessions each day. |

MEMBERSHIP |

There are two different
kinds of membership :

Membership of the Association.

Membership of the Association
Membership of World Association for Studies in Literatures in
English (WASLE) is open to scholars, critics, theorists and teachers and all
those who believe in the promotion of world literatures written or
translated in English as a source of the unity of humanity and as an
instrument of capturing the basic truths of life. The life membership of
the Association for those from India is Rs. 12000=00 and for foreign members
US Dollar 600=00 or equivalent of it in Euro or Pound and can be paid in two instalments. The life members are exempted from annual membership and are
presented with a copy of the journal only at the conference. Only the life
members are entitled to become officers of the Association for a term of 3
years. The annual membership of the Association is US Dollars 130 or
equivalent of it in Pound or Euro.
Life Membership of the Journal
The life membership of the Journal is Rs. 15000=00 for those from
the subcontinent and for all others (foreigners) it is US dollars 750=00 or
equivalent of it in Pound or Euro. It can be paid in two instalments and
foreign members can, with the permission of the President, make payment in
three instalments. The life members are entitled to free copies of the
publications of the Association to be sent by ordinary post and to hold
positions in the editorial/advisory/managerial board of the Journal for a
term of two years and officers of the Association for a term of 3 years.

Those living outside of India can send the subscription by Cheque or Draft
adding US Dollar 25 as collection charges at the address given above.

PUBLICATION |
|
WASLE publishes both
journals and books.
Journal
Contemporary World Literatures in English (CWLE) published by World
Association for Studies in Literatures in English (WASLE) and edited by
Sheobhushan Shukla and Anu Shukla, is a well received and globally
acknowledged annual (proposed to be made biannual) journal.
It aims at transcending the frontiers, at postnationalism and promotion of
world literatures in English, literary theory and translation studies. It
publishes, after a careful scrutiny, the papers submitted at international
conferences of WASLE, papers/articles/creative writing solicited from
eminent writers and the papers submitted by the life members of the journal
(on priority basis).
The life membership of the journal (CWLE), subject to revision from time to
time is $750 (Rs. 15000=00) and can be paid by a bank draft drawn in favour
of "Studies in Contemporary Literature" payable at Allahabad (India) The
life membership can be paid in two equal instalments (the President can
permit three instalments). The papers/ articles/ creative writings can be
published only when they:
Conform to the latest MLA style, contain no printing, stylistic and factual errors and are carefully edited,
checked and correctly document, Are submitted with a brief CV and a signed
certificate that the paper/ article does not in any way infringe on
anybody's copyright and that the total responsibility for the views
expressed in the paper is that of the author.

The Association also publishes books. So far the following books

(i) Postcolonialism and Fiction in English. Eds.
Sheobhushan Shukla and Anu Shukla:
The volume furthers the interrogation of the potentialities and
prejudices, privileges and paradoxes of postcolonialism as a major critical
discourse in the humanities by a good mix of some reputed international
scholars and critics: Clare Brandabur, Elvira Pulitano, Hima Gabriella,
Miriam Murtuza, Haidar Eid, Sandeep Sangahera, Pablo Mukherjee, Saikat
Majumdar, Daniel Roberts, Sheobhushan Shukla and Anu Shukla.
It offers seminal insights into self-contradicting dimensions of
postcolonialism, its special affinity with fiction, feminism, quest for
identity and ethnicity and linguistics and issues of self, alterity and
subalternism. |

(ii) Migrant Voices in Literature in English.
Eds. Sheobhushan Shukla and Anu Shukla:
This volume not only examines migrancy in literature, narratives,
literary discourse and aesthetics but various formulations with regard to
how it differs from migrant consciousness and creativity, homeland, mother
tongue, identity and borders. While the contributors include such well
reputed critics like Gina Wisker, Chris Weedon, Felicity Hand, Dolores
Herrero, Pauline Dodgson, Alessandro Monti, Sheobhushan Shukla, Anu Shukla,
Nirmal Selvamony and M.G. Hegde, the creative writers who figure in their
discourses are Black and Asian Women Writers. Jean Rhys, Abdulrazak Gurnah,
Janette T. Hospital and various world famous Indian novelists, poets and
short story writers writing in English. |
